OpenAI lets ads talk back inside ChatGPT

OpenAI introduced a new set of ad experiences inside ChatGPT on Sept. 16, 2026, centered on Sponsored Agents that let a user start a separate, business-sponsored conversation after clicking an ad.

The pitch is simple. Ads that answer back.

See a dining table in an ad and a shopper can ask the sponsor how it fits a room, how many it seats, or how to care for the finish, then tap through to the brand site when ready. The company says the conversation with a Sponsored Agent is clearly labeled and distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and from the user’s original chat, and it is now being tested with select advertisers in the United States according to the announcement.

That separation is architectural. Sponsored Agents are labeled as sponsored and are not supposed to alter, rank or become part of ChatGPT’s independent response to the user’s original request, a constraint consistent with the broader ChatGPT Ads design where ads do not rewrite the model’s answer.

Before Sept. 16 had to come the plumbing. ChatGPT Ads had to exist as an inventory layer, Ads Manager as the campaign system, and ChatGPT Work as the place where prompts can turn a brief or a URL into structured work. Shopify Catalog already fed products into ChatGPT, and HubSpot already held customer context that could be used to create and follow up on leads.

What is live now connects those pieces. On Sept. 16, businesses managing customers in HubSpot can connect a ChatGPT Ads account, create ads, track performance and follow up on leads inside HubSpot. US Shopify merchants can install the new ChatGPT Ads app in the Shopify App Store and launch campaigns with products already integrated via Shopify Catalog. The Shopify app goes international Sept. 23 in markets where ChatGPT Ads are available.

For campaign creation, OpenAI is pushing natural language controls. Advertisers can use the Ads Manager plugin directly in ChatGPT Work to turn a website or brief into a campaign, review performance and get next-step recommendations. Inside Ads Manager, the system will suggest copy and imagery based on the landing page and campaign objective, and advertisers can review and edit before publishing. An opt-in text customization can adapt headlines and descriptions to the conversational context and automatically translate copy to the user’s preferred language.

Control remains nominally with the advertiser, but scale is limited for now. Sponsored Agents are a US-only test with select partners, and AI-generated suggestions still require human approval before they run.

OpenAI is betting discovery will shift from search results to conversations. If the wall between sponsored agents and independent answers holds in practice, that bet becomes a platform. If it blurs, trust does the work instead.
