MCP Servers

The Model Context Protocol (MCP), introduced by Anthropic, is emerging as the standard for connecting large language models to external tools and data sources. Unlike narrow integrations, MCP provides a unified interface for any LLM to access databases, APIs, file systems, and services. Early adopters—Edgar (database governance), AWS (Bedrock integration), and community builders on GitHub—are validating the architecture. The MCP ecosystem is in its infancy, but the strategic importance is massive. Whoever owns the standard framework for "plugging tools into LLMs" controls the API surface for the next decade of AI applications. This mirrors how npm and PyPI became critical infrastructure—MCP could become the equivalent for AI tool distribution. Startups building vertical-specific MCP servers (e.g., Slack integration, Salesforce integration, GitHub integration) will carve defensible niches. The winners won't be protocol builders—they'll be those owning highly-integrated vertical ecosystems. Expect rapid standardization and consolidation as major platforms (Stripe, Shopify, Atlassian) release official MCP servers. First-mover advantage matters significantly here.
