Brave has announced BAT Roadmap 4.0, a significant evolution for its Basic Attention Token (BAT) and Brave Rewards ecosystem. This update aims to adapt to the changing digital economy, addressing challenges from AI adoption and the rise of cashless transactions.

The roadmap introduces several mutually reinforcing initiatives, including a unified Brave Wallet, the Brave Rewards Card, and the BravePay protocol.

Unified Wallet and BravePay

The browser-native Brave Wallet is undergoing a complete redesign, merging traditional payment methods like credit cards with self-custody crypto accounts and Brave Rewards. This integration seeks to provide an intuitive interface for managing diverse payment options.

Central to this expansion is BravePay, a new stablecoin protocol layer. BravePay will facilitate private, self-custodial transactions, enabling users to on-ramp from fiat directly and transact using .brave addresses. It also supports GENIUS-compliant stablecoins, offering a private alternative to traditional payment networks.

The Brave Rewards Card, a virtual and physical payment card powered by BravePay, will extend Brave Rewards beyond the browser. Users will earn BAT rewards on everyday purchases, leveraging traditional payment rails while benefiting from exclusive offers. This initiative builds on the existing Brave Rewards framework.

Creator Compensation and AI

Acknowledging the growing challenge for creators to monetize content in an AI-driven landscape, Brave is introducing a Creator Contribution Protocol. This system aims to provide micro-royalty payments to verified creators when their content is utilized by participating AI products, ensuring attribution and compensation.

Brave's roadmap also lays groundwork for the emerging agentic economy, supporting autonomous agentic payments in the browser through Internet-payments x402 and Machine Payments Protocol (MPP). These blockchain payment solutions are critical for machine-to-machine and human-to-machine interactions. BravePay's compatibility with these protocols positions it for future growth in this space, similar to recent innovations like London's Riva securing €2.5M for blockchain payments.

BAT Utility and Rewards Evolution

BAT Roadmap 4.0 will also introduce new transactional BAT utility and rewards. A percentage of Brave's net revenue from Wallet features, Brave Rewards Card, and BravePay protocol will fund BAT buybacks, supporting user rewards and program growth.

The Brave Ads Notification unit will gradually sunset by the end of 2026, shifting towards informing users about offers rather than serving as direct ad units. Brave Rewards will evolve into a broader loyalty system, incorporating offers, purchases, and wallet activity, alongside new loyalty tiers and a crypto-abstracted BravePass for premium access.
