ChatGPT Work Turns Transcripts Into Templates

ChatGPT Work converts meeting transcripts into templated Google Docs and Slides, then reuses the formatting for every future update.

ChatGPT Work takes a messy meeting transcript and returns two finished artifacts. A Google Doc for the team and a five-slide deck for leadership, both saved as templates for next week.

According to OpenAI Youtube, the workflow runs in the desktop app or at chatgpt.com and uses plugins to connect to the apps you already use.

How the Docs and Slides flow works

You install the Google Drive plugin from Plugins and connect the account so ChatGPT can create actual Google Docs and slides. Gmail and Calendar can be connected the same way.

You start a new chat in Work mode and paste the transcript from the weekly AI adoption meeting. Then you prompt for a specific Doc structure: executive summary, this week's updates, decisions, risks and blockers, action items, open questions and next steps, with clear headings, short bullets, bolded decisions and an action items table.

If an owner or deadline is missing, it flags the gap instead of guessing. The finished Doc becomes the source for the leadership deck.

For slides you specify the outcome: five slides covering biggest updates, what is working, what is not, what is next and decisions needed. You pass in last week's deck so it matches formatting. ChatGPT builds the new deck from the Doc.

The template payoff

Then you invoke template creator on each file. For the Doc it learns heading hierarchy, formatting and the action items table. For the deck it learns slide order, layout and visual style.

Next week you drop in the new transcript and call the meeting summary template to generate the Doc, then the leadership update template to turn that Doc into the deck. No rebuilding.

Why this matters for enterprise AI

OpenAI is not selling a better summary. It is selling system memory for work.

The transcript to summary trick is table stakes. Every copilot does it. The durable value is turning that one-off generation into an internal standard that compounds each week.

Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) owns the destination files. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) owns the same loop in 365 Copilot. OpenAI is inserting itself as the conversion layer between raw talk and shippable docs, and plugins via MCP to Slack, Gmail, Calendar, GitHub and Drive are the wedge.

That is the same play Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) runs with Gemini in Workspace and Microsoft runs with Copilot Pages and Loop. OpenAI's edge is portability across clouds. Its risk is permissions and trust when a model can write to Drive on your behalf.

How it stacks up and what is still missing

StartupHub.ai data shows Google Drive at 13/100, which reflects how commoditized the storage layer has become even as the editors remain critical. Competitors we track that orbit the same workflow score higher on that proprietary index, including Backpack at 53/100 and Egnyte at 51/100, while Dragbox and Hyst both sit at 8/100 and Librito at 1/100.

Against those, OpenAI is not competing as storage. It is competing as orchestration. Backpack and Egnyte help teams organize files. ChatGPT Work helps teams standardize what goes inside them.

The demo does not show governance. Who can create org-wide templates, who approves them and where edit history lives when AI drafts for you are open questions. Pricing, retention of template data and enterprise controls for Drive write access are also not detailed.

Expect the next battle to be template distribution. If OpenAI can ship a marketplace for team templates that sync to Drive, it becomes the default system of record for how work gets documented.
