Rivian is accelerating its decision-making with a sophisticated AI and analytics strategy built on the Databricks Lakehouse Platform. The electric vehicle maker aims for full self-service, governed trust, and AI-powered insights at what it calls "the speed of thought." This collaboration is reshaping how Rivian's teams interact with data across manufacturing, supply chain, finance, and operations.

"At Rivian, we are heavily leaning on AI and tech partners to rethink analytics: full self-serve, high trust at the speed of thought," said Romit Jadhwani, Sr. Director, Enterprise AI, Data & Productivity at Rivian. "We leverage the platform to empower our employees to be thought leaders. Databricks is a key partner in making this happen."

Unified Governance and Trust

Central to Rivian's approach is establishing a governed intelligence layer. This ensures that dashboards, natural-language queries, and custom AI applications all stem from a single, trusted data foundation. The goal is to move beyond static reports to dynamic exploration and action.

Rivian partnered closely with Databricks as a design partner, influencing approximately 58 new AI/BI features. This collaborative effort is key to consolidating the semantic layer, governance, and sensitive data controls within Databricks.

Metric Views and Unity Catalog Drive Trust

The challenge of identifying trustworthy metrics is being addressed through Databricks' Unity Catalog Metric Views. Rivian is standardizing key business metrics, ensuring transparent logic, lineage, and permissions. This initiative aims to certify over 50 critical metrics.

AI agents are also being deployed internally to expedite the certification process for new data sets, allowing Rivian to adapt quickly without compromising data integrity.

Democratizing Data with AI-Powered Analytics

Rivian is breaking down technical barriers to self-service analytics. Leveraging Databricks AI/BI, Databricks Genie, and AI-assisted development, users without deep technical skills are building sophisticated solutions.

Examples include a finance analyst creating a CFO revenue dashboard and a treasury manager developing a cash position dashboard. This shift is enabling true governed self-service analytics, where business users can explore data and build applications rapidly.

The platform's ability to meet users in natural language, coupled with certified metrics and unified governance, removes the skills barrier. This allows analytics teams to focus on building better data products and expanding AI-powered workflows, fostering a more agile relationship between business and data.

Operationalizing Insights in Manufacturing and Supply Chain

Rivian's governed analytics foundation is directly impacting core operations. Real-time dashboards built on Databricks provide supply chain planners with unified visibility into inbound supply, reducing monitoring time by 60-70%.

Root cause analysis for inventory discrepancies has been slashed from over 30 minutes to under two minutes. This is achieved through parallel queries that surface linked data across systems, leveraging ML and Unity Catalog's governance capabilities for faster investigations.

ML models are now predicting inventory stock-out risks more than four days in advance. This proactive approach, enabling earlier intervention and scoring parts before critical levels are breached, exemplifies the advancement of data democratization in manufacturing.

AI Agents Accelerate Trusted Data Products

To scale data product development across diverse systems, Rivian is utilizing AI agents. These agents assist platform and data engineering teams in ingesting, certifying, and maintaining data products, streamlining operations across multiple domains and source systems.
