Cloudflare has launched the beta of its Registrar API, a move that allows developers to search for, check availability, and register domain names directly within their build environments. This capability aims to eliminate workflow interruptions for developers, especially those utilizing AI agents for coding and project scaffolding.

The API is built to integrate fluidly with editors, CI/CD pipelines, and agent-driven tools, closing a gap identified by its developer community. Cloudflare Registrar, launched seven years ago with a commitment to at-cost pricing and no markups, has grown significantly, and this API extends that philosophy to programmatic access.

Built for Agents and Automation

The API's design prioritizes machine-friendliness. Search queries return potential domain names, check queries provide real-time availability and pricing, and registration requests are streamlined. This makes it suitable for both traditional API clients and AI agents acting on a user's behalf.

For instance, an AI agent can now suggest names, verify registrability, confirm pricing, and complete a purchase without requiring the user to leave their current tool. This new functionality is accessible through the existing Cloudflare API, meaning no separate integration is needed for compatible environments.

The core functionality includes three primary actions: searching for domains, checking their availability, and registering them. For a selection of popular TLDs, developers can consult the API documentation. Premium domains are supported, requiring explicit fee acknowledgement.

A practical workflow might involve an AI code editor generating a domain name suggestion, checking its availability and price, and then registering it with a single confirmation from the user. This process can be completed in seconds, utilizing default account contact and payment information.

The API offers three key steps:

  • Search for domain names: Query for potential domains, optionally specifying TLDs.
  • Check availability and pricing: Verify real-time status and exact cost for registration, especially crucial for popular names.
  • Register the domain: A simple request to secure the domain, with WHOIS privacy enabled by default and free of charge.

Registrations typically complete within seconds. For longer processes, the API returns a 202 Accepted status with a polling URL. Premium domain pricing is clearly communicated during the check phase and must be acknowledged during registration.

Cloudflare emphasizes that domain registrations are non-refundable. The API includes checks to ensure agents confirm names and prices with users before proceeding with registration, mitigating accidental purchases.

At-Cost Pricing Extends to API

Cloudflare's unique position as both a developer platform and a registrar allows it to offer domain services at cost, without added markups, whether accessed via the dashboard or the API. This pricing model remains consistent for all access methods.

Future Expansion

This beta release focuses on the initial domain lifecycle stages. Cloudflare plans to expand the API to cover post-registration management, including transfers, renewals, and contact updates, aiming for a broader registrar-as-a-service offering later this year.

The expanded API is intended to enable platforms like website builders and AI products to integrate domain registration directly into their user experiences, allowing users to acquire and provision domains without leaving their chosen service or agent workflow. Developers can explore the domain search API and related documentation to begin integrating.

Cloudflare encourages developers to share their experiences and feedback through its community channels.
