AMD to pay $8.2B for Fei-Fei Li's World Labs

AMD will acquire World Labs in an all-stock deal valued at about $8.2 billion.

The agreement brings the San Francisco lab led by Dr. Fei-Fei Li into AMD to help shape hardware, software and systems around where models are headed next. World Labs builds spatial-intelligence models that generate, reconstruct and simulate interactive 3D environments from text, image and video, plus tech for robotic learning and simulation.

That focus is the tell.

AMD chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su said building compute for the next generation of AI requires deep understanding of how models are evolving, and that Li and the World Labs team bring research leadership to develop hardware, software and systems for what comes next. Li, co-founder and CEO of World Labs and a Stanford professor known for her work on ImageNet and computer vision, said advancing the next generation of AI requires close collaboration across model research, systems and compute, and that joining AMD gives her team resources and engineering depth to accelerate research.

Following the close, World Labs will keep working on model research inside AMD, with Li as executive vice president and chief scientist reporting to Su. The structure matters for buyers of AI infrastructure. Instead of tuning chips only for current large language model serving, AMD wants insight from a frontier lab working on reasoning, robotics, simulation and physical AI. Those workloads stress memory, interconnect and software differently than chatbots.

For teams building 3D generative tools, world models and robot policies, the message is concrete. If World Labs research steers AMD roadmaps, expect future AMD GPUs, CPUs, networking and software to be co-designed for interactive 3D generation and simulation-heavy training. That could affect budgeting and deployment choices for labs that have standardized on CUDA and Nvidia systems, and for startups weighing open alternatives for inference and fine-tuning.

The deal is not done. It is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions, and an all-stock price will move with AMD shares until then.
