OpenAI is broadening its advertising strategy for ChatGPT, introducing cost-per-click (CPC) bidding as a new option for advertisers. This move aims to offer more direct control over ad spend, aligning costs with user actions rather than just impressions.

The company announced that advertisers can now bid on a CPC basis, a significant shift from the initial cost-per-mille (CPM) model used during the pilot phase. This change is designed to reflect the often decision-oriented nature of ChatGPT conversations, where a click can signal genuine user interest.

Advertisers will only be charged when a user clicks on an ad, providing a more performance-driven approach to campaign budgeting. OpenAI plans to continue supporting CPM bidding and expects to introduce further optimization options in the future.

Self-Serve Ads Manager Beta Launched

Alongside CPC bidding, OpenAI is launching a beta version of its self-serve OpenAI Ads Manager. Initially available to advertisers in the US, this tool allows businesses of all sizes to directly create, manage, and monitor their ad campaigns within ChatGPT.

The platform enables users to handle everything from registration and payment setup to budget allocation, bid management, ad creative uploads, and performance tracking.

OpenAI has also been working with agency partners including Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis, and WPP, as well as technology partners like Adobe and Criteo, to facilitate ad purchases through existing business tools.

Enhanced Measurement Tools

To help advertisers better understand campaign effectiveness, OpenAI is rolling out enhanced measurement capabilities. These include Conversions API and pixel-based tracking.

These tools are designed to provide aggregated performance data on user actions post-ad engagement, such as purchases or sign-ups, without compromising individual user privacy or accessing conversation content.

This improved measurement helps optimize ad delivery for relevance and impact, moving beyond simple impression counts to focus on tangible outcomes.

Building the Future of ChatGPT Ads

This expansion marks another step in OpenAI's ambition to build a comprehensive advertising platform for ChatGPT ads. The company reiterates its commitment to core principles: maintaining the independence of ChatGPT's answers, ensuring user privacy, and keeping users in control of their experience.

OpenAI sees a significant opportunity to connect users exploring needs and options with relevant products and services through advertising, with plans for new formats and objectives in the future.
