AI agents are poised to become significantly more powerful, thanks to a major expansion of tools available via the x402 protocol. Apify, a platform for web scraping and automation, has announced that its marketplace now supports over 20,000 of its 'Actors' through x402, a tenfold increase from the previous ~2,000 endpoints.

This move directly addresses a key bottleneck for autonomous agents: the ability to discover and pay for necessary tools without human intervention. Traditionally, integrating services required complex workflows involving account creation, billing setup, and credential management. The x402 protocol, originally developed by Coinbase and now an open-source standard under the Linux Foundation, streamlines this process.

Seamless Agentic Payments

With x402 support, AI agents can now autonomously purchase services like web data extraction and automation. Payments are handled using USDC on the Base blockchain, eliminating the need for pre-provisioned API keys. Agents can simply call an Actor's API endpoint, receive a 402 Payment Required response detailing payment schemes and costs, and then automatically authorize the payment from their integrated wallet.

This integration works in conjunction with the Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing agents to inspect tool metadata, detect payment requirements, and execute payments seamlessly. Coinbase's Agentic Wallet CLI is provided as a tool to facilitate this, enabling agents to manage their wallets, authorize x402 payments, and run Apify Actors with minimal setup.

Variable Costing and Settlement

Apify's integration also leverages the updated x402 specification, supporting both 'exact' and 'upto' payment schemes. While the 'exact' scheme requires a fixed upfront payment, Apify employs a pre-paid deposit and refund mechanism for variable-cost Actors. The 'upto' scheme, preferred for batch operations, allows agents to authorize a maximum spend, with the service charging only for the actual usage upon completion.

This enables agents to perform complex, multi-step tasks autonomously. For instance, an agent could be tasked with gathering social sentiment, market data, and on-chain movements to generate trading insights, all settled via x402 without manual intervention for each service.

The platform offers a drop-in agent skill for easy integration, simplifying the process for developers and agents alike.
