AWS is making 402 Payment Required the checkout for AI agents, with AgentCore Payments on the buy side and WAF monetization on the sell side.

AWS is putting the long-unused HTTP 402 code to work through x402 agent payments, giving agents a way to pay for paywalled content on their own.

Senior solutions architect Anil Nadiminti demoed the setup at AI Engineer, framing it as AWS's agent e-commerce track for paywalled publishers.

How the paywall stall actually works

An agent hits a paywall and stalls. It has no wallet, no card, and no way to clear a micro cent transaction.

The server now returns 402 Payment Required, including a price and a payment rail, instead of blocking the request or handing over content for free.

The agent picks a method, signs an authorization, and the server uses a facilitator to verify and settle onchain before releasing content.

Think of it like a vending machine flashing a QR code instead of saying sold out. The payment itself becomes the credential.

AWS says settlement averages 200 milliseconds on Base at roughly a tenth of a cent, compared with card rails that tack on 25 cents plus 2.5 percent.

What it solves, and what it doesn't

On the buy side, AgentCore Payments lets agents discover over 10,000 endpoints, pay with Coinbase or Stripe preview wallets, and stay within session budgets like 5 dollars per 30 days.

Keys never reach the agent. They stay in a KMS-backed token vault, and payments run on a decoupled deterministic layer to limit prompt poisoning risk.

On the sell side, WAF AI Traffic Monetization detects over 650 bots, verifies signatures, classifies intent like training versus search, and prices by path, bot identity, and intent at the CloudFront edge.

Publishers keep 100 percent of revenue with no SDK or origin change, though they still absorb infrastructure load and have to trust the bot verification to price things correctly.

Builders should enforce per-session caps, log full traces, and treat WAF rules as business logic, because an agent with an open wallet is a spending bot.

Bending 402 into a machine checkout is a clever move, but volume so far sits at 50 million dollars across 170 million transactions on one chain, so chain and facilitator risk still lingers.
