Nvidia's $5 Billion Bet on Ilya Sutskever's Secretive AI Lab

Nvidia invested five billion dollars in Safe Superintelligence on July 27, giving Ilya Sutskever's lab a deep-pocketed equity partner and access to the chipmaker's next-generation Vera Rubin compute platform, TechCrunch and Bloomberg reported. The deal will increase SSI's GPU capacity by an order of magnitude and signals a full departure from the Google Cloud TPU infrastructure the lab has used since its founding in June 2024.

Compute for a Stake, and a Rare Look Inside

The structure of the Nvidia deal is notable for what flows in both directions. SSI receives a hardware commitment, access to Vera Rubin systems, and what Sutskever described as a step-change in research capacity. Nvidia, in turn, takes an equity position and gains what the two companies described as "rare access into the company's closely guarded research," with collaboration rights on Nvidia's current and future compute platforms.

Sutskever confirmed the deal in a public statement: "We have research that is worthy of scaling up, and having access to a big NVIDIA computer will let us do so. We are confident that our big bet on the Vera Rubin platform will take us to the next level." The phrasing confirms something SSI has not said before: its internal research, until now developed in near-total secrecy, is at a stage where the team believes additional compute will unlock meaningful progress.

SSI's prior investors include Greenoaks Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, and Alphabet. The Nvidia deal adds a chip supplier as a co-investor, a structure that echoes the vendor-financing arrangements Microsoft used with OpenAI and Amazon with Anthropic, though Nvidia's role is compute supply rather than cloud credits.

From Google Cloud to Vera Rubin: A Compute Strategy Shift

SSI spent its first two years training on Google Cloud's TPU infrastructure, under a partnership the lab announced in 2025. The Nvidia deal does not simply add a second compute source; multiple outlets reporting on the announcement describe it as a platform migration, with SSI committing its research roadmap to Nvidia's GPU ecosystem going forward.

Vera Rubin is Nvidia's next-generation GPU architecture, succeeding the Blackwell generation. SSI's access to the platform represents an early placement at the frontier of available compute, which matters for labs pursuing research at the scale superintelligence work requires. Sutskever's phrase "order of magnitude" translates, by straightforward arithmetic, to roughly ten times the throughput the lab had under its prior Google Cloud arrangement.

The shift also has strategic implications beyond raw capacity. Nvidia's stake gives the chipmaker a financial interest in SSI's success and, via the research-access clause, a direct window into the methods SSI believes are worth scaling. For Nvidia, the deal is both a revenue commitment and an intelligence-gathering exercise about where frontier AI research is heading.

$9.1 Billion Raised, Nothing Shipped

No new valuation was disclosed alongside the Nvidia announcement, meaning the $32 billion figure may now substantially understate SSI's implied worth given the scale of the latest commitment.

What makes the funding arc unusual is the absence of any commercial output. SSI has released no model, no product, no research paper, and no public demonstration in the two years since Sutskever, Daniel Gross, and Daniel Levy published a single-page website with a short manifesto. The lab has stated explicitly that it will not pursue interim releases or commercial products on the way to its singular goal. Most companies raising nine-figure sums, let alone nine-billion-dollar sums, do so against some evidence of working technology. SSI has financed two years of research on reputation and the credibility of its founders alone.
