The IoT market will reach $1.6T by 2027, driven by industrial digitization, smart city mandates, and edge AI. But unlike the consumer IoT hype of 2016, today's winners are industrial-focused: factory monitoring (Augury, Samsara), fleet management (Motive, $12B), energy monitoring (Sense, Span), and infrastructure sensing (Urbint, Everactive). The breakthrough is economics. Sensors that cost $100 in 2015 now cost $1. Edge processors (NVIDIA Jetson, Qualcomm) enable AI inference without cloud connectivity. LPWAN networks (LoRa, Sigfox, NB-IoT) provide connectivity for $1/year per device. This cost collapse enables deployments that were previously impossible: monitoring every pipe, valve, and motor in a refinery; tracking every package in a warehouse; sensing every parking space in a city. The winning business model is "sensor + software + insights." Pure hardware companies face commodity margins. Pure software companies lack differentiation without proprietary data. The winners combine both: deploy sensors, collect proprietary data streams, and sell analytics and predictions. Samsara ($16B+ public) proved this model for fleet management; the pattern is replicating across manufacturing, energy, agriculture, and smart buildings.
