The company's approach hinges on programs, partnerships, and open tooling designed for real-world impact. This past May, the Open Source Assistive Technology Hackathon convened 124 participants, including developers, advocates, and individuals with disabilities, to tackle access barriers in assistive technology projects. Over 25 projects were advanced during the two-day event.

To facilitate participation, GitHub hosted a learning room offering hands-on guidance for assistive technologies like NVDA screen reader and keyboard-only navigation. Office hours with the NV Access team provided crucial support for project teams.

The GitHub accessibility documentation has also been updated to aid contributors using screen readers and other assistive technologies, offering guidance for tools like GitHub Copilot with accessibility in mind. These guides are informed by individuals with lived experience, aiming to reduce barriers and promote confident engagement.

Hackathon projects spanned diverse areas, from camera-based assistive tech for visually impaired users to accessible gaming and adaptable physical tools. Ongoing updates can be tracked in the Open Source Assistive Technology Hackathon repository.

Building Accessibility into Workflows

Furthering these efforts, GitHub partnered with All Things Open for the first Open Source Accessibility Summit in October 2025. This event gathered 100 attendees to define a roadmap for improving open source software accessibility.

GitHub is also investing in practical resources. The Open Source Accessibility organization serves as a hub for collaboration and roadmap sharing. A best practices guide and updated documentation offer actionable advice.

The GitHub Accessibility Scanner, an AI-powered tool using GitHub Actions and Copilot, aims to identify and fix accessibility issues automatically. Additionally, an open source Figma toolkit supports accessibility-focused design handoffs.

These tools are designed to streamline the integration of accessibility into daily development practices.

How You Can Contribute

Two upcoming events offer direct opportunities for engagement. The Open Source Accessibility Community Day on July 9, 2026, is a virtual event showcasing hackathon project progress and identifying areas where contributors are needed.

The Open Source Accessibility Summit in Raleigh, North Carolina, on October 19, 2026, will focus on teaching accessibility best practices for open source contributions, emphasizing direct learning from individuals with disabilities.

GitHub encourages continued connection via its Open Source Accessibility organization and its Slack channel.
