GitHub Copilot app launches for agents

GitHub is betting big on the future of AI-driven development with the launch of its GitHub Copilot app, a new desktop experience aimed at managing increasingly complex agentic workflows. Announced at Microsoft Build, the app seeks to address the fragmentation and context-switching that have emerged as AI agents become integral to software development.

The core problem GitHub aims to solve is the disjointed nature of current agent-assisted development. With multiple AI agents potentially working in parallel on tasks ranging from bug fixes to feature implementation, developers face challenges in tracking progress, validating outputs, and maintaining clear audit trails. This new application is designed to be a control center for these agentic operations.

A Centralized Hub for Agentic Work

The GitHub Copilot app introduces a unified 'My Work' view, consolidating active agent sessions, associated issues, pull requests, and background automations across connected repositories. This aims to provide developers with a clear, consolidated overview of ongoing AI-driven tasks, allowing for easier inspection and redirection.

Each agent session operates within its own isolated git worktree, preventing interference between parallel tasks and simplifying management. The app handles the setup and cleanup of these environments automatically, freeing developers from manual branch juggling.

For power users, GitHub is also introducing Copilot Max as an upgrade option for enhanced high-volume usage.

Bridging Intent and Execution with 'Canvases'

Beyond simply tracking tasks, the Copilot app introduces 'Canvases'—bidirectional surfaces where human developers and AI agents can interact directly with the work itself. These canvases can visualize plans, pull requests, terminal sessions, or deployment statuses, allowing agents to update them in real-time while developers can edit, reorder, or redirect actions directly on the same interface.

This feature aims to move beyond chat-based instruction, making the AI's actions visible and actionable. It's a critical step towards what GitHub calls 'agent experience' (AX), fostering a more collaborative environment between humans and AI.

Secure Sandboxing for AI Execution

To enable agents to perform more complex actions like running code, testing changes, and iterating without impacting production systems, the Copilot app offers both local and cloud sandboxing options. Local sandboxing runs in an isolated environment on the developer's machine, with enforced policies restricting access to system resources. Cloud sandboxing provides fully isolated, ephemeral Linux environments hosted by GitHub, offering flexibility and remote access.

Scaling Code Reviews for AI Output

As agentic workflows accelerate, code review processes face increased pressure. GitHub Copilot's code review capabilities are being extended to handle this scaling demand. The system can now be customized with specific standards and workflows, and a medium-tier review option utilizes a higher-reasoning model for improved precision.

The introduction of the GitHub Copilot app signifies a significant step towards more integrated and manageable AI-assisted software development, directly addressing the evolving needs of developers working with AI agents.
