Amazon, Corning Strike Fiber Optics Deal

Amazon announced a significant multi-billion dollar agreement with Corning Incorporated, aiming to bolster domestic fiber optics manufacturing. This partnership will supply optical fiber for Amazon's expanding data center infrastructure across the United States.

The deal is expected to generate 1,000 new, highly skilled jobs at Corning's facilities in North Carolina. It also includes hundreds of construction jobs to expand Corning's physical footprint in the state.

A new workforce development program will be established through collaboration with Catawba Valley Community College. This initiative will focus on training students for careers in fiber optic manufacturing and related technical roles, enhancing the talent pool for these high-paying positions.

Boosting US Manufacturing and Supply Chains

This investment is part of Amazon's broader commitment to strengthening the U.S. supply chain and domestic manufacturing base. It also aims to support regional efforts in expanding residential and commercial fiber densification.

"Amazon's investments in North Carolina have created more than 26,000 jobs across the state. This multibillion-dollar agreement with Corning continues that commitment, channeling investment into American manufacturing and creating 1,000 new jobs at their facilities near our data centers," stated Matt Garman, CEO of AWS. The partnership will also focus on training North Carolinians for skilled roles in fiber optics.

This agreement with Corning complements Amazon's previously announced $10 billion investment in North Carolina for cloud computing infrastructure. Since 2010, Amazon has invested over $20 billion in the state, creating more than 26,000 jobs across various sectors.

"This multibillion-dollar agreement, between Amazon and Corning, will create 1,000 family-sustaining jobs for hardworking North Carolinians while also strengthening the critical infrastructure of the U.S. supply chain," said U.S. Senator Ted Budd.

Wendell Weeks, chairman, CEO, and president of Corning, highlighted the agreement as a milestone for both companies and for American manufacturing. The investment will enable Corning to expand production and create the new advanced manufacturing jobs.

The collaboration also emphasizes workforce development, building on Amazon's existing programs in North Carolina that have provided training for nearly 7,000 people.
