Leveraging Global Supply Chains

TerraPower is actively collaborating with international partners to build a robust supply chain. Levesque pointed to the company's five-year relationship with South Korean firms like SK, its second-largest investor, and Hyundai, which is part of its supply chain. "The Korean supply chain is formidable," Levesque commented, noting that South Korea has extensive experience in building nuclear plants. The recent announcement of a framework agreement with Hyundai Engineering and Construction for up to eight reactors underscores this strategic focus. He added that Korean partners are committed to meeting TerraPower's cost and schedule targets.

A New Financial Model for Nuclear

Addressing the historical challenge of nuclear project financing, Levesque emphasized a shift away from relying on residential ratepayers. "The White House and governors are not going to allow existing electricity ratepayers, mom and pop, to pay for the CapEx of these new plants," he explained. Instead, TerraPower is structuring deals where eventual electricity customers, such as data center operators, will enter into long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) to cover the capital expenditures. This model aims to secure the necessary funding without passing the initial costs onto the general public.

Cost Competitiveness and Future Scale

Levesque expressed confidence in achieving cost competitiveness with renewable energy sources and natural gas. He stated that once initial non-recurring investments are made, the atrium reactor design, requiring less steel and concrete and offering faster construction, will be economically attractive. "We're going to have a design that will be competitive with other energy sources," he asserted. Looking ahead, TerraPower aims to scale up production significantly, targeting the deployment of approximately ten reactors per year by the mid-2030s. This ambitious scaling plan is supported by partnerships that bring industrial expertise, such as Hyundai's experience in building ships at scale.
