Stripe Unveils Developer Discovery Tool

Stripe has launched a new public preview tool called Stripe Directory, designed to act as a central hub for discovering businesses and services operating on its network. This initiative aims to streamline the process for both human developers and AI agents to find and integrate with various offerings. The directory allows for keyword-based searches, returning structured data that facilitates immediate action.

The Stripe Directory indexes several key components of the Stripe ecosystem. This includes published applications on the Stripe App Marketplace, services available through Stripe Projects that can be provisioned via the CLI, and pay-per-call APIs listed on mpp.dev. It also encompasses the wider Stripe business network, making a diverse range of services discoverable.

Terminal Access and AI Integration

Developers can interact with Stripe Directory directly from their terminal using the Stripe CLI's directory plugin. This allows for quick searches and retrieval of structured results, such as provider slugs and endpoints. The output can be formatted in JSON for easier parsing by AI agents.

Stripe is positioning the Directory as a crucial component for agentic workflows. By installing specific agent skills, AI agents can autonomously discover, evaluate, and integrate services. This enables agents to parse search results, compare options, and automatically set up integrations using returned endpoints or project listings.

Example Use Cases

The tool demonstrates practical applications, such as integrating with Stripe Projects for services like serverless PostgreSQL databases. A developer can search for a provider, like Neon, and then use the returned commands to inspect its catalog and add the project directly.

Similarly, for services supporting machine payments, developers can search for capabilities like sending mail and discover providers such as PostalForm. The Directory provides the necessary commands to fetch pricing and initiate payments programmatically using `mppx fetch`.

Becoming Discoverable

Businesses can opt-in to be listed in Stripe Directory by setting up a public Stripe profile. To maximize visibility, companies are advised to ensure their website content is crawlable by Stripe, write clear and descriptive profile information, and maintain accurate display names and handles.

Users can view their own listing using the `stripe directory me` command. To be removed from search results, businesses can simply enable the 'Make your profile private' option in their Stripe profile settings.
