OpenAI is making its most advanced AI models, including GPT-5.6, available at no cost to 100,000 academic researchers globally. The program, dubbed ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, aims to democratize access to cutting-edge AI tools and accelerate scientific progress. This initiative reflects a broader commitment of over $250 million through 2027 dedicated to supporting external scientific research.

The program is initially rolling out to 10,000 researchers this summer at institutions like the Institute for Advanced Study and École normale supérieure. OpenAI plans to expand access to 100,000 researchers by 2027, providing them with powerful tools to tackle complex problems, generate hypotheses, and improve research productivity. Researchers can use these models for tasks ranging from genomic analysis and protein modeling to literature reviews and grant writing.

Expanding AI's Research Footprint

The move signals a significant push to embed advanced AI into the scientific workflow. OpenAI reports that roughly 1.3 million people already use ChatGPT weekly for advanced science and mathematics, generating about 8.4 million messages. This adoption is particularly visible in mathematics, where AI has shifted from occasional tool to a regular research component.

Researchers using these tools intensively are undertaking more ambitious work, with the top 20% of AI users nearly twice as likely to attempt tasks requiring four or more hours of human effort.

What Researchers Get

Selected participants will gain free access to frontier models, including GPT-5.6 family models, alongside expanded deep research capabilities and higher usage limits. This includes GPT-5.6 Terra for everyday tasks, GPT-5.6 Luna for faster responses, and GPT-5.6 Sol for the most demanding scientific and mathematical problems. For instance, GPT-5.6 Sol demonstrates advanced mathematical reasoning, scoring 83% on FrontierMath Tier 4 compared to GPT-5.5's 72.5%.

Participants will also access over 75 life science skills for genetics, genomics, and drug discovery, plus connectors for scientific literature, databases, and computational notebooks. Codex will aid in code development and data analysis, while ChatGPT Work will support longer-term projects like grant applications and manuscript drafting.

The program includes tailored training and hands-on support from specialists familiar with research workflows. OpenAI is also fostering a community for researchers to share approaches and provide feedback.

OpenAI's Broader AI Research Investment

This program is part of a larger investment by OpenAI, including the $50 million NextGenAI initiative and collaboration with the Department of Energy. The company believes that empowering a wider research community with capable tools is key to accelerating scientific breakthroughs. Applications are now open for qualifying researchers at degree-granting institutions with significant research activity. Approved researchers can invite up to four collaborators from their institution.
