Merge bets its agent plumbing on OpenAI

Merge says its OpenAI-powered Agent Handler secures remote tool calls to Salesforce and Gmail at 99.9% reliability, but its CEO still rewrites the bot.

Merge says its Agent Handler, Gateway and Workforce products broker secure remote access between AI models and business systems, with tool calls running through authenticated connectors to Salesforce, Gong, Google Sheets, Gmail and Apollo rather than local execution, and every call requires pre-approved credentials and permissions.

Shensi Ding, chief executive and co-founder of Merge, made that plumbing the center of her story.

Ding told OpenAI her team uses GPT-6 Astra for product testing and marketing and Codex for code review, and she walked through a review of a new provisioning tab in Merge for Workforce where the team debated making the "Add tool pack" action a separate link, with Codex supplying feedback and engineers responsible for validating and shipping the change. She said GPT-6 Astra was fast and better at reviews and had a personality the team liked, while Codex had improved a lot, and she framed the choice as a lively internal debate where employees pick their own tools.

Charlie Lynch, who leads sales at Merge, was her counterpoint inside the company. Ding said Lynch built reusable AI workflows for deal approvals, forecast updates and renewal next steps, using the model to draft the material and then reviewing the recommendation himself before acting.

The clearest demo was the dinner bot. Ding said the bot starts with a city and an ideal guest profile, pulls candidates from the CRM and Apollo, checks past invites and responses, drafts outreach from her email, maintains the attendee tracker, proposes a seating chart and creates calendar notes for sales and customer success to annotate. Merge reported in October 2026 that the same planning tasks went from dozens of hours to about 30 minutes per event over the prior three months, and it ran 16 executive dinners in Q3 up from eight in Q2 with more than 30 planned in Q4, according to the company. Ding said tool calls through Merge succeed 99.9% of the time compared with around 60% for public MCP servers.

That reliability claim sits against what Merge has already put in the market. Per Dynamic Business, Merge Agent Handler manages credentials and permissions and provides full audit trails for every tool call, while Merge Gateway is positioned to balance cost, reliability and performance across models. Per AICrier, Merge recently added Stripe Link Agent Wallet as a beta connector so agents can initiate purchases without seeing card details. Ding positioned GPT-6 Astra as more persistent than other systems she has tried, saying it continues to execute every task and fills gaps with common sense rather than forgetting earlier instructions and doing only the last thing.

The friction is human judgment. Ding said she rewrites anything that sounds off and curates the guest list using relationship context the bot does not have, and the company says engineers still validate code before it ships. No one in the account claimed the system replaces hosting, relationship building or on-the-ground logistics.

What Ding declined to detail is how Merge prices or throttles that brokered access when every employee can choose a different model and trigger paid tool calls across connected systems, and where the audit trail stops if a model drafts an email she then sends as herself.
