Sakana AI has secured a multi-year research contract with Japan's Atla (Agency for Defense Innovation, Science and Technology) to accelerate defense capabilities. The firm will focus on developing foundational technologies for integrating and rapidly analyzing data from all domains – land, sea, and air – including drone inputs.

The core objective is to enhance command and control (C2) systems by creating a unified analytical platform. This system aims to process the immense volume of multi-modal data generated by sensors and units, enabling faster and more accurate decision-making. This initiative marks a significant step in Sakana AI's strategy to implement its AI technologies within the defense and intelligence sectors.

Accelerating Situational Awareness

Central to the research is the development of innovative AI agent technology, particularly Small Visual Language Models (SVLM). These models are designed for efficient operation on edge devices such as drones and mobile terminals.

SVLMs will enable rapid on-device recognition of situations and streamlined information processing, directly feeding into an upgraded C2 infrastructure. This capability is crucial for bolstering national security, where rapid information processing is paramount.

The project aligns with the growing recognition of 'information power' as a critical component in modern security discussions. Sakana AI aims to leverage its cutting-edge research to address the challenges of analyzing and organizing vast amounts of cyber-physical data, a key aspect of AI in defense and AI for intelligence.

Agile Development and Open Innovation

This contract is positioned as a "demonstration-type breakthrough research" project by Atla. Sakana AI plans to fuse its proprietary technologies with existing hardware through agile development methodologies, prioritizing practical application and efficacy verification. The company emphasizes an open innovation approach, including collaboration with key partners, to contribute to AI implementation in the defense domain.

Sakana AI is actively recruiting for roles including Applied Research Engineer, Software Engineer, and Project Manager to bolster its domestic defense and intelligence team.
