On April 9th, two distinct outages plagued the Copilot coding agent. Users faced substantial delays in starting new sessions, with approximately 84% of requests impacted. Queue wait times surged to 54 minutes, a stark contrast to the usual 15-40 second baseline.

Copilot's Rate Limiting Woes

The primary culprit for the Copilot disruptions was a bug in the service's rate limiting mechanism. This flaw incorrectly applied limits globally rather than per individual installation, exacerbated by a surge in API traffic from a client update.

A subsequent incident on the same day was compounded by a caching bug that prolonged the rate-limited state, leading to recurring unavailability.

GitHub reports that these events delayed or failed around 22,700 workflow creations.

Code Search and Audit Logs Also Affected

Earlier in the month, a routine infrastructure upgrade for the code search service went awry. An aggressive automated change caused a coordination failure, halting indexing and leading to stale results. An unintended service deployment further escalated the issue into a complete outage for code search queries.

Separately, the audit log service experienced a 28-minute outage on April 1st due to a failed credential rotation, rendering audit log history inaccessible via API and web UI.

Addressing the Issues

In response, GitHub is rolling out improvements. These include more gradual infrastructure upgrades with enhanced health checks, deployment safeguards, faster recovery tooling, and better traffic isolation. For Copilot, fixes involve disabling faulty caching mechanisms and ensuring rate limits are correctly scoped.

The company is also strengthening credential rotation processes and enhancing monitoring configurations to improve detection speed and operator visibility.
