Most of the builds worked on the first take, according to OpenAI News. One cyberpunk prototype still needed a performance fix.

From one grey box to three playable games

Playco started with an unthemed grey box made of simple primitives.

They iterated a few times on gameplay and creative details to lock down a shared base.

From that base, GPT-6 Astra generated three themed prototypes in one pass. That's the workflow Playco is testing with Playbot, its AI-powered IDE.

Lead Product Engineer Joao Vieira, who runs product engineering at the startup, said the first prototype came out strong. Only gameplay preference tweaks were needed.

For builders, the point is throughput. Vieira framed it as testing ten ideas and actually playing them, rather than imagining how they might feel.

Manual fixes dropped 50%, but not to zero

With the previous model, the initial grey box was less polished.

Prompting to correct it turned counterproductive, so engineers had to fix the game by hand. With Astra, that hand work fell by half.

It still leaves half the manual work on the table. The cyberpunk case shows performance and optimization remain human tasks.

The real story is iteration cost. Fewer hand fixes mean more ideas reach a playable state quickly, which is how small game teams decide what to fund.

What Playco doesn't define is what counts as a manual fix, how it was measured, or how many hours that 50% actually represents.

Vieira said Astra is much better at reasoning about space and positioning elements sensibly. He also pointed to improved vision and UI responsiveness inside Unity.

Because Playbot can let the model play and validate its own changes, Astra also caught bugs more easily and flagged player experience improvements. That's a meaningful gap from code-only copilots that never launch the build.

GPT-6 Astra is showing up in other early production tests, including document review, but the model has also drawn scrutiny. OpenAI flagged critical cyber risks in the Astra model in early August, a reminder that more capable agents need tighter deployment controls.

Playco hasn't shared benchmark scores, engine versions, or failure cases beyond the one performance fix. That makes the 50% claim hard to generalize.
