Frontier Deployment and Local Talent

The new Applied AI Lab will be central to the OpenAI Singapore partnership. It will create over 200 technical roles in Singapore, making the city-state a global hub for Forward-Deployed Engineers. These engineers bridge cutting-edge research with practical application, working directly with organizations to solve critical issues. The lab will align with Singapore's AI Mission priorities, particularly in sectors like public service, finance, and healthcare.

Mr Chng Kai Fong, Permanent Secretary (Digital Development and Information), stated that the partnership reflects Singapore's strategy to grow new sectors, anchor frontier companies, and equip its workforce for the AI era. OpenAI’s investment is expected to strengthen AI adoption and secure high-value jobs for Singaporeans.

Developing the Next Generation of AI Talent

OpenAI will collaborate with Singaporean government bodies and ecosystem partners to build AI skills. This includes developing AI-enabled learning tools with the Ministry of Education and GovTech, supporting educators through an OpenAI Academy chapter, and launching a Forward-Deployed Engineer training program.

The company will also participate in the National AI Impact Programme to enhance AI capabilities across the technology workforce. These efforts are designed to prepare Singapore for widespread AI adoption.

Broadening AI Access

The initiative seeks to ensure AI's advantages extend beyond large enterprises and tech developers. OpenAI plans to work with local partners on accelerator programs for AI startups and workshops for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). The focus will be on practical adoption, assisting founders and improving SME operations and customer service.

Ultimately, OpenAI for Singapore aims to be a long-term partner in building an AI-ready economy that is useful, responsible, and broadly beneficial.
