OpenAI Builds AI Infrastructure in Michigan

OpenAI has begun construction on a massive 1GW data center campus dubbed "The Barn" in Saline, Michigan. This facility is a cornerstone of the company's long-term OpenAI Stargate program, aimed at building the foundational infrastructure for advanced AI.

The project, developed in partnership with Oracle, Related Digital, and Walbridge, prioritizes community engagement and economic benefits. Local residents will not bear the costs of the infrastructure, and water usage will be minimized through a closed-loop cooling system, reportedly consuming as much water as a typical office building.

The Barn is projected to create over 2,500 union construction jobs and 450 permanent onsite positions, alongside significant county-wide and indirect employment opportunities. This initiative aligns with Michigan's industrial heritage, aiming to catalyze a new era of reindustrialization rooted in skilled labor.

OpenAI is investing $10 million, alongside partners, into improvements for the Saline Recreation Center, a community-identified priority. The project is also expected to generate $1 billion in tax revenue over its lease term, benefiting local schools and services.

Furthermore, OpenAI is committing up to $45 million in Codex credits for eligible Michigan students, aiming to equip over 400,000 individuals with AI skills. Collaborations with state and local entities will focus on AI literacy and workforce training.

This data center development signifies a critical step in OpenAI's evolution from research to product deployment, focusing on building the physical infrastructure necessary to make advanced AI more accessible, reliable, and cost-effective globally.
