Caldwell detailed how Mariana Minerals is focused on addressing these challenges by applying AI and automation to the entire lifecycle of mineral extraction and refinement. He explained their strategy: "We're making a big bet on autonomy and refineries, using reinforcement learning to actually remove humans from the loop and determining how refineries operate." This approach aims to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve the safety and reliability of operations.

Baglino highlighted Heron Power's role in the energy sector, focusing on solid-state transformers and advanced power electronics. He pointed out that while semiconductors have seen significant advancements, the grid infrastructure itself has lagged. He stated, "The world's leading producer of silicon carbide, which is a key power semiconductor, is based here in the US. So we should be leveraging the applications of that technology here first, manufacturing here at home."

The Urgency of Re-industrialization

Both founders emphasized the critical need for the US to re-industrialize and rebuild its manufacturing capabilities. Caldwell expressed concern about the potential strain of increased AI demand on an already fragile grid, stating, "AI will put an undue strain on an already faltering grid. We will demand more energy than we can keep up with." This highlights the interconnectedness of technological advancement and industrial capacity.
