Job Summary

Lumentum is seeking a Night Shift Equipment Maintenance Technician to support 24/7 manufacturing of advanced photonic and optoelectronic devices. This role is responsible for sustaining lithography and vacuum-based semiconductor processing equipment used in the fabrication of lasers, optical components, and III-V devices. The technician will perform hands-on troubleshooting, maintenance, and real-time production support to ensure high equipment uptime, process stability, and product quality during overnight operations.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Monitoring & Troubleshooting

  • Monitor and maintain performance of lithography and vacuum-based processing equipment, including:
    • Steppers, mask aligners, coat/develop tracks
    • Vacuum chambers and pumping systems (dry pumps, turbomolecular pumps, forelines)
  • Rapidly diagnose and resolve equipment faults, alarms, vacuum leaks, and process deviations.
  • Perform safe and efficient tool recoveries to return equipment to production.

Vacuum Systems Support

  • Maintain and troubleshoot high and ultra-high vacuum (HV/UHV) systems used in semiconductor processing.
  • Diagnose issues related to:
    • Vacuum integrity (leaks, pressure instability)
    • Pump performance (mechanical, turbo, cryo where applicable)
    • Valves, gauges, mass flow, and gas delivery systems
  • Perform pump swaps, rebuild coordination, and chamber conditioning as required.
  • Support vacuum system calibration and ensure compliance with process specifications.

Preventive & Corrective Maintenance

  • Execute scheduled PMs on lithography and vacuum equipment to ensure reliability and precision.
  • Perform corrective maintenance including:
    • Component replacement (seals, O-rings, pumps, sensors)
    • System calibration and alignment
    • Cleaning and rebuild activities for vacuum chambers
  • Update and improve maintenance procedures where applicable.

Production Support

  • Support manufacturing operations to maintain continuous production of photonic devices.
  • Escalate complex equipment or vacuum-related issues with detailed documentation.

Lithography & Process Support

  • Assist in controlling critical lithography parameters:
    • Critical dimension (CD) uniformity
    • Overlay/alignment accuracy
    • Defectivity reduction
  • Ensure stable resist processing and exposure conditions within controlled vacuum/cleanroom environments where applicable.

Data Collection & Shift Communication

  • Log equipment performance, downtime events, and maintenance activities.
  • Provide comprehensive shift handoff reports detailing tool status and open issues.
  • Support engineering teams with data collection for root cause analysis.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, vacuum performance, and uptime.
  • Participate in improvement projects related to:
    • Vacuum system stability
    • Tool availability and throughput
  • Recommend enhancements to spare parts strategies and PM schedules.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree or technical certification in Electronics, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 2+ years of experience in semiconductor, photonics, or precision manufacturing.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting experience with complex manufacturing equipment.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Mechanical, electrical, pneumatic systems
    • Vacuum systems and gas handling fundamentals
  • Willingness to work a permanent night shift schedule (including weekends/holidays).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with lithography equipment (ASML, Canon, Nikon, SUSS, TEL tracks).
  • Experience supporting vacuum-based semiconductor tools (e.g., deposition, etch, implant).
  • Familiarity with high vacuum (HV/UHV) systems, leak detection techniques, and pump technologies.
  • Exposure to III-V or photonics manufacturing (InP, GaAs, lasers, optical components).
  • Ability to read schematics, P&IDs, and vacuum system diagrams.
  • Experience with automation, robotics, or PLC systems.
  • Basic data analysis skills (Excel, JMP).

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Strong troubleshooting skills in both lithography equipment and vacuum systems
  • Ability to work independently during off-shift hours
  • High sense of urgency and ownership in a production environment
  • Detail-oriented with strict adherence to procedures and cleanliness standards
  • Clear communication for shift handoffs and escalation

Work Environment

  • Semiconductor cleanroom environment supporting photonics manufacturing
  • Frequent interaction with vacuum systems, gas lines, and precision optical equipment
  • Strict adherence to contamination control and EHS standards
  • Physically active role (standing, lifting, working on equipment)
  • Night shift schedule (10–12 hour shifts; compressed workweek possible)
  • Shift differential and overtime opportunities
