Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has detailed a significant investment aimed at improving services for customers in rural America. Speaking with CNBC's Jim Cramer, Jassy stated that Amazon has committed $4 billion to bolster its rural delivery infrastructure. This move comes as other companies reportedly scale back their presence in these areas.
Jassy emphasized that rural customers deserve the same rapid delivery speeds and reliable internet access that urban dwellers often take for granted. Amazon is working to build out a dedicated last-mile delivery network for these communities.
The company has already more than doubled same-day delivery capabilities for rural areas this year, with plans for additional delivery stations. Jassy believes that waiting more than three days for e-commerce items in rural areas is an unfair and poor customer experience.
Bridging the Digital Divide
Beyond package delivery, Jassy highlighted Amazon's Project Kuiper, its low Earth orbit satellite initiative, as crucial for expanding broadband connectivity to underserved rural regions.
He pointed out the stark digital divide, where essential online activities like business, education, and entertainment remain inaccessible to many without reliable internet. Providing this connectivity, Jassy stated, can fundamentally transform opportunities for rural populations worldwide.
