Cloudflare is rolling out Precursor, a new system designed to combat sophisticated bots by analyzing user behavior throughout an entire web session. This expands bot detection beyond isolated checkpoints like logins or checkouts, offering continuous client-side monitoring.

Traditional bot mitigation relies on network-level analysis and point-in-time verification, but modern bots can mimic legitimate actions during brief interactions. Precursor addresses this by observing the nuances of human interaction over time, such as the physics-constrained arcs of mouse movements or the cognitive delays in typing, which are difficult for automation to replicate consistently.

Continuous Behavioral Analysis

Precursor works by injecting lightweight JavaScript into web pages. This script continuously collects interaction data, like pointer movements, keyboard activity, and focus changes, without interfering with application logic. These signals are then processed in real-time on Cloudflare’s edge servers.

The system builds a session-level view of user activity, making it harder for bots to reset their behavioral signature by refreshing a page. By evaluating behavior across an entire session, Precursor provides significantly more signal for bot detection decisions.

This approach improves detection precision, distinguishing real users from automation without resorting to aggressive friction for legitimate visitors. For bot developers, it raises the operational cost by requiring them to simulate a full, consistent human session, a far more complex undertaking.

Privacy and Integration

Designed with privacy in mind, Precursor captures only the minimum data necessary to identify automation, such as the timing and rhythm of keyboard input, not the content itself. These behavioral signals are processed as aggregate patterns internally by Cloudflare’s bot detection systems and are not exposed to customer dashboards or tied to user identities.

Precursor integrates seamlessly with existing Cloudflare Enterprise Bot Management features, including Turnstile. The system feeds data into bot scores, challenge decisions, and security rules, enhancing current defenses immediately.

Enhanced Analytics

To support this new detection layer, Cloudflare is introducing session-based views in its Security Analytics. These dashboards shift focus from individual requests to complete visitor journeys, allowing businesses to understand typical session flows, identify deviations, and pinpoint sessions exhibiting signs of automation.

Precursor is currently available in beta and will be free until its general availability release later this year. Enabling it requires no changes to existing applications.
