In a recent Bloomberg Intelligence podcast, Mandep Singh, Global Head of Tech Research at Bloomberg Intelligence, joined the discussion to provide insights into the financial strategies of major semiconductor players like Nvidia and Broadcom, and touched upon the burgeoning AI market and retail sector performance.

Nvidia's Evolving Role in the AI Cycle

Singh highlighted that while Nvidia's earnings reports may no longer be the "cultural event" they once were, the company remains central to the AI build-out. "Nvidia has become a lot bigger and it's hard to produce those kind of beats that they did a couple of years back," Singh noted. He elaborated on Nvidia's strategic shift, stating, "they are not just selling the chips but also using the balance sheet in a big way to create an ecosystem around what they're doing." This includes setting up special-purpose vehicles (SPVs) with private equity partners to purchase chips and then lease them to AI companies like OpenAI, effectively de-risking the capital expenditure for the end-users.

Broadcom's Debt Financing and AI Infrastructure

The conversation then turned to Broadcom's significant debt issuance, with Singh pointing out the $60 billion debt deal. He explained the innovative structure involving an SPV that would buy chips from Broadcom and lease them to Anthropic. This arrangement allows Anthropic, a fast-growing AI lab, to access necessary computing power without the immediate burden of carrying the full cost on its balance sheet. This leasing model, facilitated by the SPV, is crucial for companies that may not yet have the balance sheet strength of hyperscalers.

Anthropic's IPO Prospects Amidst Market Conditions

Discussing Anthropic's potential IPO, Singh expressed optimism. He noted that despite potential market volatility, a company with Anthropic's growth trajectory, from $10 billion in ARR to an expected $100 billion by year-end, is unlikely to be deterred. He drew a parallel to SpaceX's successful IPO, suggesting that investors would be eager to participate in Anthropic's public offering regardless of broader market conditions, given its significant growth metrics.

US Consumer Spending and Retail Sector Performance

Shifting to the retail sector, Singh discussed the implications of recent earnings reports from Walmart and Target. He observed that while some investors were underwhelmed by Walmart's results, the underlying health of the consumer remains strong. "Traffic was up, in fact, traffic was up at both Walmart and at Target," he stated, indicating continued consumer engagement. The growth in e-commerce sales, particularly Walmart's over 20% increase, underscores the ongoing shift in shopping patterns. Singh also addressed the impact of tariffs, noting that while they increase costs, retailers are finding ways to mitigate these through negotiations and efficiencies, and the new tariffs are manageable.

E-commerce Trends and Future Outlook

Punam Goyel, Senior US E-commerce and Retail Analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, provided further context on retail trends. She clarified that the reported non-store retail figures in government reports don't capture the full e-commerce picture, as they exclude sales from brick-and-mortar businesses. Goyel estimated that online retail sales are closer to 25% of total retail sales, with potential to reach 31% in the next three to four years. She highlighted that while categories like food are still underpenetrated online, the overall shift to e-commerce is robust, with companies like Amazon and Walmart seeing significant gains. Regarding the competitive landscape, Goyel noted that while Walmart has scaled its e-commerce operations significantly, Target is also making progress, though its business mix, 80% discretionary versus Walmart's 50% grocery, creates different growth opportunities.
