Apple M6 MacBook Pro raises the bar for on-device AI laptops
Apple Newsroom

Apple Newsroom says Apple has introduced the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6, positioning the 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU as a step up in performance and on-device AI. The model starts at $1,999 in the US and $1,899 with education pricing, with 16GB unified memory standard and up to 32GB.

M6 adds two CPU cores and two GPU cores over the prior generation, Apple said. The chip pairs a 12-core CPU billed as having the world’s fastest CPU core with a 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators in each core and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. Memory bandwidth reaches 170GB/s.

The pitch is speed you can feel. "The 14-inch MacBook Pro is the pro laptop of choice for a wide range of users," said Shelly Goldberg, Apple vice president of Hardware Engineering, who said M6 lifts CPU speed and graphics while expanding on-device AI. Her point matters because the machine is aimed at students, business users and creators who run LLM workloads locally.

Apple said the 12-core GPU delivers up to 30 percent faster graphics and up to 25 percent faster AI workloads versus M5, and the Dual Neural Engine delivers up to 1.9x faster performance than M5. Against the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1, Apple cited up to 11.7x faster ray-traced render in Blender and up to 13x faster time to first token for LLM prompt processing, with 1.3x gains in both metrics versus the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5.

For chip rivals the bar moves again. Nvidia and AMD still set the pace on discrete GPU performance, while Qualcomm and Intel are pitching NPUs for Windows AI PCs, and Apple is now tying Neural Accelerators into every GPU core plus a doubled Neural Engine to keep inference on device. StartupHub.ai data shows on-device AI hardware remains one of the most closely tracked segments, with laptop and edge-chip makers clustering around local LLM, image generation and super-resolution use cases that Apple highlighted for M6.

Battery and connectivity also frame the comparison. Apple rates the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 at up to 24 hours of battery life, which per Macworld breaks down to up to 24 hours of video streaming or 16 hours of wireless web browsing, matching the M5 model, according to Macworld.

The new MacBook Pro keeps the Liquid Retina XDR display with up to 1600 nits peak HDR brightness and a nano-texture option, a 12MP Center Stage camera, six-speaker audio, and three Thunderbolt 4 ports plus HDMI, MagSafe 3, SDXC and headphone jack. It adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 and ships with macOS 27 and Apple Intelligence features including Siri AI. Pre-orders open the next day on apple.com and in the Apple Store app with retail availability the following week, and Apple claims fast charging to 50 percent in 30 minutes with a 96W adapter.

The limitation is in the fine print. Those M1 and M5 speedups are workload specific and compare specific 13-inch and 14-inch configurations, so real gains will vary by app and memory config. If Apple holds its schedule, the test will be independent Blender, Affinity, After Effects and Xcode runs on shipping units.
