OpenAI's publishers don't equal ChatGPT reach

Ahrefs counted 85 domains covered by OpenAI's 20-plus publisher deals and found 10 rank among ChatGPT's 50 most-cited sites. A deal alone does not explain which of those partners ChatGPT cites.

OpenAI says it licenses current and archived content to show summaries with attribution and links. Ahrefs says that should make partners highly visible. Visibility happened for some, not for all.

Per Ahrefs, the November 2026 snapshot of 5.5 million US ChatGPT answers shows 47 partner domains in the top 500. The leaders are not newsrooms. Vogue has 42,108 citations at rank 25, Car and Driver has 41,603 at rank 18, Good Housekeeping has 35,728 at rank 21, Tom's Guide has 36,439 at rank 15 and TechRadar has 31,415 at rank 24. The Washington Post is the most-cited single news partner with 25,614 citations at rank 48, just ahead of The Guardian with 24,336 at rank 50.

The strongest fact for the partnership story holds. Ahrefs said partner sites were 7.5% of citations among ChatGPT's 200 most-cited domains in March 2026, then 15.8% in July and 12.5% in late September. That is a real shift, even if it eased.

What the count leaves out undercuts a simple pay-to-rank narrative. The data is US-only, so Spanish, French and German partners are undercounted. El País has 1,762 citations, As has 1,310, Bild has 77 and Welt has 304. Politico has 10 and Politico Europe has zero. Individual citations move quickly. In a tracking study cited by Ahrefs, more than 1,300 prompts were tracked daily for four weeks. About a quarter of cited pages repeated the next day, while most-cited domains changed by about 14% from one day to the next.

The same deal does not lift every title in a group equally. Within Hearst, Car and Driver and Good Housekeeping sit in the top 25 while the San Francisco Chronicle has 3,985 and Houston Chronicle has 3,448. Within Dotdash Meredith, People has 25,631 while Investopedia has 3,217. Within Condé Nast, Vogue has 42,108 while Vanity Fair has 3,261 and The New Yorker has 3,099. Within Axel Springer, Business Insider has 16,415 while Politico has 10. Product reviews and lifestyle advice fit what people ask ChatGPT to do. Hard news does not, deal or no deal.

For PR or outreach aimed at visibility in ChatGPT, a partner badge alone is not the target. Check which sites ChatGPT already cites in your category and prioritize a partner that is already cited there.
