The rapid pace of artificial intelligence development demands that investors move just as quickly to stay ahead of the curve. Dave Munichiello, managing partner at venture firm GV, believes the next wave of opportunities lies in the application layer of AI. Having already invested in AI infrastructure chip startups, Munichiello shared his insights on the evolving AI investment landscape, the strategic importance of software layers, and the enduring significance of Silicon Valley as an innovation hub.

The Application Layer Opportunity

Munichiello highlighted the recent acquisition of Modular by Qualcomm as a prime example of GV's investment thesis. Modular, as a software layer that enables any AI model to run on any chip, addresses a critical need in the AI hardware ecosystem. "Chris's idea was what if there was an alternative to CUDA that was more open and could work for any chip and any model?" Munichiello explained, referencing the vision behind Modular, founded by Chris Latner and Tim Chen. He noted that Qualcomm's early customer relationship and eventual acquisition of Modular was a strategic move to achieve this goal.

When asked about the acquisition process, Munichiello emphasized that his advice is always guided by what is best for the founders. He stated, "The thing that I think about when I think about, you know, what is best for a company is what's best for the founder." In Modular's case, the founders were drawn to Qualcomm's vision of disrupting the CUDA ecosystem over the next decade, supported by Qualcomm's capital and focus.

The Role of M&A and IPOs in AI

Munichiello discussed the various paths for startups to realize their vision, including IPOs and mergers and acquisitions (M&A). "Our objective is to help those companies grow and realize the technology that they're building, the vision of that technology, and get it out into the market," he said. He noted that while IPOs provide significant funding and a major milestone, M&A is also a crucial exit strategy.

He elaborated on the idea that sometimes a company's journey involves both. "Sometimes, like, in the case of Slack, it was IPO and then M&A." This dual path allows technology to eventually become integrated into larger platforms, funded by public markets.

Silicon Valley's Enduring Appeal

Addressing the concentration of AI activity, Munichiello acknowledged the continued dominance of Silicon Valley. "We still think the best companies are everywhere in the world. But right now, the clear concentration and the and the activity is happening in the valley," he stated. GV, with offices in London, New York, Cambridge, Mass., and the Bay Area, actively encourages its investors to spend more time in San Francisco due to the sheer volume of AI activity there. He mentioned that partners like Kristal Huang in New York spend every other week in San Francisco to stay connected to this hub.

Valuations and GV's Investment Strategy

Munichiello touched upon the challenge of valuing private companies, especially in the fast-moving AI sector where companies often stay private longer. He observed that valuations are increasing, largely driven by the immense Total Addressable Market (TAM) for AI technologies. However, he stressed GV's contrarian approach to investing. "There are some firms that just look at conviction. And so when you're just following conviction or you're just following heat, you're going to invest in things that everybody else thinks aren't interesting. We tend not to do that. We tend to be quite contrarian," he explained.

This contrarian strategy led GV to invest in infrastructure before the ChatGPT moment and then pivot to AI applications when others focused on infrastructure. Currently, GV is excited about the prospects of "AI for science." Munichiello believes this area, which uses advanced AI models to drive breakthroughs in fields like material science, physics, and mathematics, will be a significant area of growth and impact in the coming decade. "We think that rather than, the chattypty moment, the chatbot moment being the thing that connects with Main Street, it might be those scientific discoveries that connect with Main Street that increase the human condition," he concluded.
