TRIC Robotics Raises $5.5M Seed for UV-C AgTech Robots

TRIC Robotics, a San Luis Obispo-based startup, recently secured $5.5 million in seed funding. Version One Ventures led the round. This investment supports the company's expansion of its UV-C light robotics fleet.

TRIC Robotics develops tractor-sized autonomous robots. These robots utilize UV-C light to eliminate bacteria and reduce pest populations on strawberries. Furthermore, they employ vacuums to remove bug residue without harming crops. The company provides its service to farmers overnight, replacing traditional pest control sprays.

Advancing UV-C Robotics in Farming

Initially, TRIC Robotics focused on 3D printed robots for SWAT teams after its 2017 founding. The company pivoted to agriculture in 2020, aiming for greater impact. Consequently, it collaborated with the USDA to commercialize UV light technology for farming applications. This led to the development of TRIC Robotics' current system.

The company currently partners with four large strawberry producers. It has deployed nine robots, with three more units under construction. This funding will accelerate the deployment of more robots, furthering robotics innovation in the sector. The focus on reducing pesticide use aligns with broader trends in sustainable farming.

TRIC Robotics' service model offers a unique approach to pest management, contrasting with direct equipment sales. This strategy, while different from some agricultural automation firms like FarmWise or Iron Ox, aims for rapid traction. The company aims to expand its fleet and target additional crops. This advancement in agricultural technology provides a sustainable alternative to chemical-intensive methods.
