A Long History with Technology

will.i.am's journey into technology and AI began long before many others considered its potential. He recalled a pivotal moment in his youth when his mother bought him a boombox, sparking a deep dive into music creation. This early fascination with tools like synthesizers, drum machines, and later, his MacBook and Pro Tools, laid the groundwork for his interest in AI. He sees AI as an extension of these tools, capable of transforming imagination into reality through intuitive interaction.

"AI's just like the world's biggest sampler," will.i.am stated. "It's sampled everything, whether it's books, language. The machine is freaking amazing. But humans are even more amazing. Owning Your Digital Essence

His response shifted the focus from the technology itself to the ownership of one's digital self.

"You're asking the wrong question," he asserted. "The question you should ask: Are you worried that you don't own your voice? Everybody. Not just musicians. Every single person needs to own their data, their essence, their likeness. You got to use your imagination and push industries to protect people in this new realm that we're in." He emphasized that just as people protect their physical homes, they must establish similar protections for their digital data and personal AI.

AI as a Creative Partner, Not a Replacement

will.i.am dismissed the notion that AI is an assault on human creativity. Drawing parallels to historical shifts in the music industry, such as the advent of the record player, he argued that new technologies create new industries and experiences, rather than simply mimicking existing ones.

"I think it's not the technology that you should be like, what's going on there? It's the business model," he explained. "So when people, including like colleagues of yours in the industry, other high profile figures say AI is an assault on human creativity, you don't agree? No, not at all. Because you're boxing creativity to how an industry told you you should create." He believes that AI's role is to assist and augment human creativity, enabling new forms of expression and experience.

He further elaborated that AI, while powerful, is a "regurgitation of imaginations," not a source of true creativity itself. He posited that critical thinking and purposeful imagination are AI-proof pathways to being of service.

The Future of Human Creativity

Looking ahead, will.i.am expressed his hope that the increasing prevalence of AI-generated content will elevate the value of human-made art. "There's more AI on the internet. The internet way it used to be is not the way it is now. There's just as many, if not more, bots online than there are people," he noted. "So this means live events, Broadway theater, real performance. When I say real, I'm talking about human sweat. Human rinse out, is going to be the most sought after valuable form of entertainment." He concluded by emphasizing that while machines are amazing, humans are even more so, and it's the human element, the 'sweat,' that will be truly valued.
