OpenAI's Teen ChatGPT Focuses on Safety, Not Friendship

Lauren Jonas, OpenAI's head of youth and families, joined Bloomberg Tech to discuss the company's new 'ChatGPT for Teens' initiative. The dedicated experience is designed to be a learning-focused tool for teenagers, incorporating safeguards specifically for this age group. Jonas highlighted that the underlying AI models are the same as the general version, but the key difference lies in the implemented safeguards and policies, which are tailored to be appropriate for younger users.

Safeguards and Study Mode

Jonas elaborated on the safeguards, stating they are informed by the American Psychological Association and third-party experts. These policies are designed to filter harmful content and are adapted to a teen's developmental stage. Beyond content moderation, the product itself offers a learning-centric experience. This includes a 'study mode' that can be activated, allowing the AI to respond in a way that facilitates learning, such as by posing questions or providing step-by-step guidance on complex topics.

Age Verification and Parental Oversight

Addressing how OpenAI ensures the tool is used by the intended age group, Jonas explained a layered approach. Users can self-identify as teenagers, triggering the 'for teens' experience. Additionally, OpenAI has developed an age estimation model. If a user is predicted to be under 18, they will also be directed to the teen-focused version by default. The company has also implemented parental controls, including a 'parent safety notification' feature that alerts parents if a teen appears to be struggling on the platform. Further parental controls allow for setting 'study hours,' restricting the AI to a learning-focused mode during specific times.

Focus on Learning, Not Friendship

The conversation also touched upon the potential for AI to be perceived as an emotional support or a 'friend' for teens. Jonas was clear on OpenAI's stance: "The model should not be a friend to teens. It should not be sentient. It should not claim any of this for teens." The primary goal, she reiterated, is for ChatGPT for Teens to serve as a robust learning tool. OpenAI has engaged directly with teens and parents in the product's co-design process, with the features being a response to their expressed needs and desires for learning support.

School Adoption Plans

Regarding integration into educational institutions, Jonas stated that while OpenAI is thrilled to partner with organizations like the American Federation of Teachers and develop teacher-specific tools, ChatGPT is not currently being deployed in schools nationwide. The company is taking a deliberate and thoughtful approach to school integration, with no immediate plans for broad adoption. The current focus is on supporting educators and administrators to ensure they are well-equipped to guide teen users.
