OpenAI and Figma are deepening their collaboration, introducing a direct OpenAI Codex Figma integration designed to streamline the code-to-design workflow. Announced February 26, 2026, this partnership aims to empower product builders to iterate and ship faster by bridging the gap between development and visual exploration.
The core of this integration lies in the Figma MCP Server, which directly connects Codex to Figma's design platform and tools like Figma Design, Figma Make, and FigJam. Utilizing MCP, an open-source standard enabling AI agents to interface with external data, the system facilitates a "roundtrip" workflow. Users can generate editable Figma designs from UI code and, conversely, bring design details from Figma into Codex for code implementation.
Seamless Workflow for Builders
This new capability blurs the traditional lines between design and engineering roles. Engineers can visually iterate without leaving their coding environment, while designers can work closer to real implementation without needing to become full-time coders. Loredan Crisan, Figma’s chief design officer, emphasized that the integration allows teams to "build on their best ideas, not just their first idea, by combining the best of code with the creativity, collaboration, and craft that comes with Figma’s infinite canvas."
Alexander Embiricos, Codex product lead, added that the system "doesn’t assume you’re ‘a designer’ or ‘an engineer’ first," enabling a continuous translation between intent and reality. This builds on an established partnership where Figma already incorporates OpenAI models across its platform and was an early adopter of the ChatGPT app.
Codex, which launched as a CLI in January 2025 and has since expanded to IDE extensions, web, and a macOS desktop app, now boasts over 1 million weekly users, experiencing a 400% increase in usage this year. This latest integration with Figma further extends Codex's utility, enabling a broader range of builders, from product designers to data scientists, to accelerate their development workflows.
