Magenta is developing a miniaturized catheter-mounted axial flow-pump for mechanical circulatory support of the left ventricle, based on Magenta’s core technology of a self-expanding impeller and pump head. The self-expanding impeller is comprised of a thin memory-shape metallic frame and a soft, flexible material that forms the body of the blades. When axial forces are applied during the crimping process, the impeller is elongated, and its diameter reduced. During device deployment and re-expansion, when axial forces are no longer applied, the impeller returns to its original working configuration. This technology allows for up to 3.5x expansion between the crimping profile (i.e., the insertion size into the patient’s blood vessel) and the expanded operating profile when in-position inside the patient’s body.
