Joe Lonsdale, a prominent venture capitalist and co-founder of Palantir, shared insights on the current state of AI and defense technology, highlighting the US's competitive edge while acknowledging challenges. In a recent appearance on Bloomberg Tech, Lonsdale discussed the evolving relationship between the Pentagon and startups, the US-China AI race, and the critical need for regulatory reform.

Pentagon Embraces Startup Innovation

Lonsdale observed that the Pentagon leadership now recognizes the superiority of top startups in various technological domains compared to traditional defense contractors, or "primes." This realization has prompted a strategic shift, as articulated by Secretary Hagel, towards fostering "fair competition." Lonsdale noted that this new approach allows innovative companies to "break in" and prove their designs, a departure from the previous system that incentivized extremely expensive, albeit high-quality, solutions. He emphasized that startups like Palantir, Anduril, and Sironic have demonstrated the viability of producing advanced technology at a significantly lower cost, enabling mass production of capabilities that are "many times even better" than existing options.

The US-China AI Race and IP Theft

The conversation also touched upon the intensifying AI competition between the US and China. Lonsdale stated that China has historically been proficient at copying US intellectual property and trade secrets, and this trend continues in the AI sector. However, he believes the US maintains a substantial lead, potentially "six months or twelve months ahead," a gap that is significant in a field where capabilities double every few months. Lonsdale stressed that the responsibility for detecting and preventing intellectual property theft ultimately lies with the companies themselves, as governments have historically struggled to curb such activities.

The Broken Patent System and Biotech Challenges

A significant point of concern for Lonsdale is the state of the US patent system, which he described as "completely broken." He cited the biotech sector as an example where China can rapidly replicate and patent new discoveries within 24 hours of their disclosure, undermining US innovation and investment. This issue is exacerbated by the slow pace of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval process, which can take over 700 days for pre-IND and IND filings, compared to as little as 90 days in some parts of China. Lonsdale argued that this disparity hinders the US's ability to compete and urged for acceleration in the approval process.

8VC's $1.5 Billion Fund and Portfolio Focus

Lonsdale also announced that his firm, 8VC, has closed its seventh core fund with $1.5 billion in capital, marking its largest to date. He explained that approximately 30% of the firm's capital is dedicated to companies they help found and build, such as Sironic in the defense sector. The fund will focus on seed and Series A investments, with checks typically ranging from $50 million to $100 million in today's market. Lonsdale expressed optimism about the current "AI Industrial Revolution," noting that companies in their portfolio are experiencing rapid growth, with some doubling revenue quarter-over-quarter. He highlighted recent successes, including the FDA approval of Orca Bio, a company developing advanced bone marrow grafting techniques for blood cancers and autoimmune diseases.

The Future of Defense Tech and US Competitiveness

Looking ahead, Lonsdale sees immense potential in the continuous development of drones for land, sea, and air, as well as advancements in high-power microwaves and electronic warfare. He believes the US retains a significant advantage due to its free society, strong property rights, and the capacity for "creative destruction." While acknowledging regulatory hurdles in some areas, Lonsdale is confident in the US's ability to adapt and innovate, ultimately outpacing competitors like China.
