Amazon Web Services has launched a new capability within its Web Application Firewall (WAF) designed to let content owners and API providers charge AI bots for access. Announced on June 15, 2026, the AWS WAF AI traffic monetization feature aims to address the growing need to manage and profit from autonomous AI agents accessing digital resources.

As AI agents increasingly facilitate autonomous payments, this new tool enables publishers to set access prices, accept payments via third-party providers, and manage permissions at the network edge.

When an AI bot or agent requests content or API access, AWS WAF will return an HTTP 402 Payment Required response. This response includes pricing details, accepted payment methods, and licensing terms, utilizing the x402 open protocol for machine-to-machine transactions.

The AI agent then provides proof of payment, which AWS WAF verifies instantly. A scoped access token is issued, granting access within the same request cycle.

Publishers can configure these pricing models directly through the AWS WAF console. Policies can be defined for AI bots and agents, including those with verified Web Bot Auth signatures.

Coinbase's x402 Facilitator currently handles the payment settlement and verification flows. Support for Stripe for direct account payments and the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) is planned for future integration.

This system allows for granular pricing strategies. For example, verified AI search crawlers might be offered at one price point, while unverified agents or training crawlers could incur different charges. Publishers can validate their configurations in a test mode before full deployment.

Revenue analytics are integrated into the AWS WAF console, providing publishers with a unified view of AI traffic and generated revenue alongside AI traffic analysis.

Publishers receive payments directly from AI agents, managing disbursements through their chosen payment provider.

The AWS WAF AI traffic monetization feature itself is provided at no additional charge, though standard AWS WAF usage rates apply.

This capability is available across all AWS edge locations where WAF Web ACLs are associated with Amazon CloudFront distributions.
