Anthropic and NEC Corporation have announced a significant collaboration aimed at bolstering Japan's AI engineering talent pool. NEC plans to integrate Anthropic's Claude AI model across its global operations, making it accessible to approximately 30,000 employees.

This partnership positions NEC as Anthropic's first Japan-based global partner. The joint effort will focus on creating secure, industry-specific AI solutions tailored for the Japanese market, with initial applications targeting finance, manufacturing, and local government sectors. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to develop AI-native engineering organizations.

Building Japan's AI Backbone

Toshifumi Yoshizaki, Executive Officer and COO of NEC Corporation, stated that the collaboration will allow NEC to "maximize the potential of AI in the Japanese market." The companies aim to deliver solutions that meet Japan's stringent safety, reliability, and quality standards.

NEC will also leverage Claude for its cybersecurity services, integrating it into its Security Operations Center to combat evolving cyber threats. Furthermore, Claude, including its advanced versions like Claude Opus 4.7 and Claude Code, will be incorporated into NEC BluStellar Scenario, NEC's comprehensive offering for digital transformation.

Internal AI Development

Internally, NEC will establish a Center of Excellence to cultivate a highly skilled, AI-enabled engineering workforce, with Anthropic providing technical training. NEC aims to create one of the largest AI-native engineering organizations in Japan, utilizing Claude Code for development.

Through its Client Zero initiative, NEC will also expand the use of Claude Cowork across its internal business operations before offering it externally. The collaboration is set to develop secure industry-specific AI products for Japanese clients.
