Amazon is significantly scaling its commitment to carbon-free energy, positioning itself as a global leader in corporate procurement. According to BloombergNEF, the e-commerce giant was among the top buyers worldwide in 2025, boasting the largest portfolio of its kind.

The company has pledged billions toward over 40 gigawatts of carbon-free capacity across more than 700 projects in 28 countries. This scale is equivalent to powering more than 12 million U.S. households.

This initiative extends beyond Amazon's direct operational needs. Each new project adds clean electricity to the public grid, benefiting homes, hospitals, and businesses.

Beyond procurement, Amazon is actively investing in advanced energy solutions. This includes backing small modular reactor (SMR) technology through partnerships like the one with Energy Northwest and a $500 million commitment to X-energy, aiming for over 5 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity by 2039.

The broader energy landscape is shifting rapidly, with industry driving demand and smart devices and extreme weather also increasing consumption. Internet traffic growth and mobile broadband expansion further strain the grid, though data centers still represent a relatively small fraction of global electricity use.

Carbon-free energy sources are expanding to meet these rising demands, with nuclear, battery storage, and renewables accounting for over 80% of electricity generation growth in 2024. This suggests a significant transition in the global power mix.

Amazon's renewable energy portfolio now exceeds 600 projects globally, including over 230 in Europe. This growth supports its Climate Pledge goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Recent expansions include investments in utility-scale wind farms in Greece, substantial growth in Spain and India, and the development of the country's largest wind and hydroelectric complex in Portugal.

AWS is also focusing on grid efficiency. The company supported Oregon House Bill 3336, which mandates utilities file plans for implementing Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs). These technologies can improve grid capacity and resilience faster than traditional infrastructure upgrades.

In Eastern Oregon, AWS partnered with GRID Alternatives to install rooftop solar on 10 nonprofit organizations and community facilities, generating up to 250 kilowatts of carbon-free electricity.
