Nuclear technology developer X-energy has closed a $700 million Series D funding round, bringing its total capital raised over the last year to $1.4 billion. This recent investment follows an expansion of its preceding Series C round, demonstrating sustained investor confidence in advanced nuclear energy solutions. The company has now amassed $1.8 billion in total financing to advance its high-temperature gas-cooled reactor technology.
The new capital is earmarked for scaling the supply chain necessary for the production and deployment of its Xe-100 Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). X-energy currently holds commitments for 144 SMR units, projected to deliver 11 gigawatts of electricity capacity to various industrial and utility clients. Key customers mentioned include Amazon, Dow, and the UK-based energy firm Centrica.
Jane Street led this latest investment, joining a consortium of participants that includes Ares Management funds, ARK Invest, Emerson Collective, and Point72.
This broad investor base suggests widespread institutional belief in decarbonization pathways that rely on reliable, non-intermittent power sources like next-generation nuclear fission. The Xe-100 design utilizes a unique fuel form: uranium particles encased in pebble-sized, carbon-coated spheres. Helium gas circulates over these pebbles to capture heat, which is subsequently used to drive steam turbines for power generation.
This high-temperature approach differentiates X-energy within the competitive SMR sector, which is seeing increased government and corporate focus.
