French AI startup Mistral AI, a competitor to OpenAI, has raised over €1 billion (approximately $1.04 billion) in funding to date. This impressive sum includes a record-breaking $112 million seed round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners and subsequent rounds led by Andreessen Horowitz and General Catalyst, valuing the company at nearly $6 billion. Other notable investors include Bpifrance, Eric Schmidt, Exor Ventures, and several major corporations such as Microsoft, Cisco, IBM, Nvidia, and Samsung.
The funding will fuel Mistral AI's continued development and expansion. The company, founded by former employees of Google DeepMind and Meta, focuses on creating accessible and open-source AI models, including its popular chat assistant, Le Chat, which has already achieved over 1 million downloads. Funds will likely be used for further product development, including enhancements to Le Chat and its other AI models, as well as for scaling its operations and expanding into new markets.
