Technological Advancement Over Unit Expansion

Western Digital's strategy to meet this growing demand centers on technological innovation rather than simply increasing the number of drives produced. The company is investing in technologies that enhance storage density. Tan announced that Western Digital is moving beyond its current 32TB drives and will begin shipping 40TB drives this quarter. This advancement allows for a significant capacity increase without a proportional rise in unit production. "We are not investing in increasing the number of drive units we are producing. We continue to invest in technology to increase the amount of hits and media that we produce because that's the big driver of capacity in a drive," Tan explained.

Engineering Marvels and Customer Collaboration

The development of higher-capacity drives like the 40TB model involves significant engineering complexity. Tan described HDDs as a "marvel of engineering," noting the use of approximately two-thirds of the periodic table in their production. The transition to higher capacities requires substantial re-engineering of media designs and head designs. Western Digital works closely with its customers through rigorous qualification processes to ensure the quality and reliability of their data storage capabilities.

Long-Term Agreements and Pricing Strategies

The burgeoning demand has led to discussions about long-term agreements (LTAs) with customers, mirroring trends seen in the memory market. Customers are seeking to secure exabyte supply through 2029, 2030, and 2031, driven by their comprehensive planning for AI infrastructure, from GPUs and CPUs to storage. Tan acknowledged that while securing supply is progressing, the commercial constructs, particularly pricing for these extended agreements, are still under negotiation. Western Digital is exploring tiered pricing structures based on volume commitments.

The "Make Hard Disk Drive Great Again" Moment

Tan expressed enthusiasm for the resurgence of HDDs in the technology conversation. He noted that the perception of HDDs as outdated technology has shifted, with their critical role in AI infrastructure now widely recognized. "People thought that, you know, hard drives were a thing of the past, but it's shown to be a fundamental piece of the AI infrastructure stack with 80% of all storage in the cloud and AI is continuing to reside on hard drives both today and going forward," Tan stated. He views this as a significant opportunity and a great responsibility for his team to deliver on the promise of AI.
