Google DeepMind is deepening its ties with South Korea, announcing a significant partnership with the nation's Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT). This collaboration aims to leverage frontier artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific breakthroughs and foster innovation.

The partnership, which coincides with the ten-year anniversary of the historic AlphaGo match in Seoul, underscores a shared vision that AI will be pivotal for national economic development. South Korea is noted for its high AI innovation density and rapid adoption rates.

As part of Google DeepMind’s National Partnerships for AI initiative, the collaboration will support Korea's AI strategy and cultivate a thriving AI ecosystem. This includes establishing an AI Campus within Google's Seoul offices, serving as a hub for Korean academia and research institutions to work alongside Google's AI experts.

The AI Campus will provide access to advanced AI for Science models, programs, and events. Initial collaborations will focus on research institutions like Seoul National University (SNU) and KAIST, applying AI to life sciences, energy, weather, and climate.

Specific AI tools to be explored include AlphaEvolve, a Gemini-powered coding agent; AlphaGenome, for understanding DNA mutations; and advancements on AlphaFold, which is already widely used by Korean researchers. An AI co-scientist system will also be investigated to aid researchers in hypothesis generation and verification.

Furthermore, the partnership will explore using AI models like WeatherNext to support Korea's energy and sustainability goals, particularly in predicting extreme weather events and optimizing renewable energy grids.

Investing in people and responsible development are key components. Google DeepMind will facilitate connections for Korean students, building on Google's existing AI education initiatives in the region.

The collaboration will also focus on AI safety, with joint research planned with the Korean AI Safety Institute (AISI), aligning with commitments made at the AI Seoul Summit.

This initiative builds on the legacy of AlphaGo and aims to unlock scientific discoveries that benefit society, supporting Korea's development of national AI infrastructure like the upcoming National AI for Science Center.
