Vexlum

Vexlum specializes in III-V semiconductors, essential for lasers, solar cells, and detectors. Their proprietary VECSEL (Vertical-External-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) technology addresses a critical bottleneck in high-tech industries by providing compact, cost-effective, high-power laser sources at precise wavelengths. This enables the scaling up of technologies such as quantum computing and atomic clocks. The company is vertically integrated, controlling the process from chip fabrication to final system assembly. Vexlum's technology originated from over 20 years of research at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) in Tampere, Finland, with a key collaboration with NIST in 2012 leading to the company's spinout in 2017. They are expanding from boutique production to industrial-scale capability to meet demand from the quantum, semiconductor, and space sectors.
