About
I'm Thomas, and I'm a developer. My love of technology started in my childhood as a young boy in Berlin Marzahn, a suburb on the East Side of the Berlin Wall. In 1988, I saw a Robotron KC85 in the display window of the large department store at Alexanderplatz in East Berlin, and one year later in 1989, I started writing code. That's when the love affair with software development began, and it has yet to end. After spending time designing control systems for various German automakers and finishing my PhD thesis at University of Glasgow, I bootstrapped a startup called HockeyApp and led the company as CEO through its acquisition by Microsoft in 2014. This is what led me to take the leap from Germany across the pond to the United States, and eventually to GitHub. Today, I am just as excited about the future of software development as I was when I wrote my first lines of code on that Robotron in 1989. With GitHub Copilot, and now GitHub Copilot X, we are swinging the doors wide open to a new age of AI-powered software development where every developer on this planet can build ten times as productive and for the sake of their own happiness.
