About
I'm looking for clever people who want to change the world through technology. Early in my career, I co-founded and was CTO of GlobalCenter, and later founded Global Crossing’s venture capital group. While scaling GlobalCenter, we saw an opportunity to build the world’s first native-optical IP network. When others were adopting ATM, we chose the path less traveled with a novel approach. I went on to be employee #1 and Chief Operating Officer for Opsware (acquired by HP), an early "cloud computing" company. More recently, I led Facebook's infrastructure team from 2007 until 2012. During that time Facebook grew from 35 million to over 900 million users, and witnessed unprecedented scale and velocity. One of our most impactful decisions was defying the status quo and sharing our lessons learned in infrastructure with the world through 100+ open source projects, critically databases, compilers and forming the Open Compute Project. In 2012 I became a full-time venture investor and started my own firm, Vertex Ventures US, in 2015 with a longtime collaborator. We invest within select B2B markets: enterprise, SaaS and deep-tech companies where the partners, who are all former operators, have an unfair advantage to source, filter and grow companies.
