OpenAI inks Brazil media deal

OpenAI is deepening its global media strategy with its first major partnership in Brazil, striking a deal with Grupo Folha and Grupo UOL. This collaboration will bring the extensive journalism of Folha de S.Paulo and UOL directly into ChatGPT.

Starting immediately, the over 900 million weekly active users of ChatGPT globally can access summarized reporting from these prominent Brazilian news outlets. This OpenAI Brazil partnership signals a broader push by the AI company to embed trusted news sources into its AI experiences.

The initiative emphasizes attribution, transparency, and direct links to original reporting, aiming to support the news ecosystem while providing users with reliable information. OpenAI has pursued similar partnerships in the US, UK, France, and Germany.

Sérgio Dávila, Editor-in-Chief of Folha de S.Paulo, stated the partnership underscores the value of professional journalism to major AI players.

Varun Shetty, VP of Media Partnerships at OpenAI, highlighted the goal of enhancing ChatGPT's answers with timely, locally relevant content from Brazil's leading sources.

This move offers Folha de S.Paulo and UOL a pathway to new international audiences and helps users discover credible information.

Carlos Ponce de Leon, Co-CEO of Folha de S.Paulo, believes AI will redefine the news industry, and this partnership positions Folha at the forefront of that transformation.

Paulo Samia, CEO of UOL, noted that AI platforms naturally benefit from partnering with high-quality content creators.

Murilo Garavello, UOL Content Director, expressed a desire for UOL's journalism to be accessible wherever Brazilians consume information.

Brazil represents a significant market for ChatGPT, boasting over 50 million monthly active users and processing around 140 million messages daily.

Beyond content integration, Grupo Folha and Grupo UOL will gain access to OpenAI's Codex, ChatGPT Enterprise, and API. This access is intended to explore AI's potential in supporting journalism, developing reader-facing features, and optimizing internal operations, including AI for news dissemination.
