Cursor Brings AI Coding to iOS

Developers can now build from anywhere, thanks to the public beta launch of Cursor for iOS. Previously tethered to laptops, developers can leverage the new native app to manage AI coding agents remotely.

The application allows users to launch always-on cloud agents or control agents running on their local machines directly from their phones. This enables developers to act on ideas instantly, receive notifications for code reviews, and merge pull requests while mobile, addressing what the company terms the "FOMAT: Fear of Missing Agent Time" in their Cursor for iOS announcement.

Launch and Track Agents Anywhere

Whether in transit, cooking, or at the gym, users can initiate agents by selecting a repository, choosing a model, and using voice input or slash commands. For agents running locally, a 'Remote Control' feature allows continued management from the phone, with an option to keep the computer awake.

New Mobile Workflows

Cursor's mobile app facilitates new development paradigms. This includes handling on-call incidents by launching an agent to investigate and propose fixes, resolving urgent customer issues by reproducing bugs and inspecting code remotely, and acting on visual feedback from other mobile apps by sending annotated screenshots to an agent.

Stay Informed and Involved

Once an agent is initiated, users can leave the app. Live Activities on the lock screen and push notifications keep them updated on agent status, completion, or required input. Cloud agents can generate demos, screenshots, and logs for easy review, allowing for direct merging of pull requests or further instructions within the app.

Seamless Local and Cloud Handoffs

Cloud agents operate within isolated virtual machines, offering full development environments for testing and demoing. These agents can run longer and iterate towards merge-ready pull requests asynchronously. The platform supports sending local plans to cloud agents or migrating active agents to the cloud for continuous operation, with the ability to move sessions back to a local machine for final testing.

The Road Ahead

Cursor aims for cloud agent experiences to become indistinguishable from local ones. Future developments focus on enhancing cross-environment capabilities with improved remote control and fluid handoffs. The company is also exploring repo-less chats for initiating tasks without direct codebase context, building on current team usage for querying logs and summarizing communications across platforms.
